 Facility Use Task Force Minimize

Demographics, Enrollment, Building Capacity and Utilization

At the August 23, 2007, Board of Education meeting, district administration provided an overview of demographics, enrollment, building capacity and utilization.  A main point of this presentation  is that declining enrollment within the school district has resulted in the underutilization of school building facilities. Factors which are known include:

  • Enrollment within the district has declined over the past several years and is projected to continue due to several factors including decreasing births, increasing age of resident population, and housing characteristics
  • Small schools may not have the capacity to provide the same educational opportunities as larger schools
  • Declining enrollment results in declining revenue
  • There is, and will continue to be, an excess in building capacity beginning at the elementary level
To move forward, district administration recommended that a work group be established consisting of the assistant superintendent of operations, assistant superintendent of learning services, secondary level director, elementary level director, along with the assistance of a school demographics consultant. The group met several times reviewing student enrollment, building capacities, student enrollment projections, student achievement, experiences in other school districts, along with lessons learned in other school districts.

After review of this information, district administration recommended that a Facility Use Task Force be established to review facility use and provide recommendations for Board consideration.
