When I was 3 years old, I loved the Lorax so much, I made my mother read it to me everyday for three years. We now have it memorized (well, SHE has it memorized, I have it pretty well committed [;-). Since Dr. Suess' birthday was Sunday, I headed out to East Elementary School to recite the Lorax for the kids in Ms. Salzman's class. I didn't arrange for permission with parents, so I didn't take identifiable pictures of students for the slideshow linked below.

We added a little twist to the group read. We placed the book under a document camera and students took turns flipping the pages and pointing to the words as I recited the poetry. The document camera is an amazing tool for this application. As we read through the book, students would try to catch me in mistakes and if they did, I gave them stretchy critters for prizes. We had fun reading the Lorax and using the technology to help our experience. I was so proud of these second-grade readers! They politely said "thank you" when I handed out the critters and they were engaged throughout the story! Thanks for welcoming me into your classroom Ms. Salzman and thanks to all the kids for spending time with me today!

Thank you for coming to our class, Mr. Maas! We loved having you read us the Lorax. Please come back and read to us again!
