LPS volunteers receive state awards

Volunteers from the Whitman Elementary, Options High School, and Arapahoe High School communities are winners of 2006 Colorado Association of Partners in Education (CAPE) awards. 

The I Love to Read and Soar High reading programs at Whitman Elementary school are recipients of the CAPE Group Volunteer Award.  These two programs bring neighborhood volunteers and student volunteers from Options High School together with first and second graders at Whitman.  The volunteers meet with the children once a week for an hour to help them hone their reading skills at this critical age.

Dr. Sam Langstaff is the recipient of the CAPE Individual Volunteer Award.  Dr. Langstaff is the founder of the medicine class hosted at Arapahoe High School.  This class has been available to LPS high school students for the past 31 years.  It gives students who are seriously considering a career in medicine an opportunity to hear from doctors and even shadow doctors for a day.  Dr. Langstaff not only founded and managed the program for the past 31 years, he also started a scholarship program, which awards funds to the top student in the class each year.
